We launched Schoolhouse Social in 2023 to address the need for fun and meaningful social experiences for neurodivergent children and adolescents in Melbourne.
Following extensive experience working with neurodivergent children in Australia and the UK, we set out to establish a practice dedicated to social development.
Social groups are the only service we provide, which allows us to focus on providing children with the best possible group-based support. Our core team has training in speech pathology, cognitive neuroscience, counselling, and psychology.
Our approach is informed by our clinical expertise alongside evidence-based tools and programs. From the design of our curriculum to the space we create, we endeavour to support a broad range of sensory and emotional needs.
We are profoundly aware of the importance of neurodiversity-affirming practices. We put careful thought into how our curriculum can equip kids and teens to navigate the world while ensuring their own unique perspectives and needs are respected and preserved. We are continually reviewing our materials and our approach to align with the evolving thinking in this area.
Supporting parents is central to the way we work
We are also motivated by the quiet heroism we observe in the parents of our children. We understand parents face unique challenges, so supporting them is central to the way we work.
Neurodivergence shouldn’t be isolating, but it can be - especially for school-age individuals. We know that safe and structured social experiences can help children understand their own idiosyncrasies and the world around them. We are committed to a future in which children can grow up to be themselves, and engage with their surrounds on their own terms. Through our groups we aim to provide them with the tools they’ll need to make that happen.
